A hiker challenge is an optional activity, usually associated with a particular trail and/or location, that some hikers choose to attempt.

Appalachian Trail

  • Half Gallon Challenge: Upon reaching the halfway point of the trail, eat a half gallon of ice cream in one sitting at the Pine Grove Furnace Valley Store and earn the "Wooden Spoon."

Pacific Crest Trail

  • 24/24/24: Hike the 24 miles between Hiker Heaven and Casa de Luna in 24 hours, consuming one beer per hour. Hiker Heaven and Casa de Luna stated publicly that they would not tolerate hikers who attempted the challenge, and reformulated the challenge as the "24/24/24/24," with the fourth 24 indicating that hikers who insisted on participating should sober up for 24 hours before visiting either trail angel location.
  • McDouble Challenge: Resupply on only McDouble hamburgers from McDonalds for a section of the trail. Commonly, but not exclusively associated with the Cajon Pass McDonald's. Explanatory video from Zach Rotondo on YouTube.
  • Seiad Valley Pancake Challenge: Eat five one-pound pancakes at Seiad Valley Store and your meal is free.
  • Two Week Challenge: Cross the state of Oregan in two weeks. Alternately, cover the distance between Ashland, Oregon and Cascade Locks, Oregon.

Other Challenges

  • 24 Hour Challenge: Hike as many miles as possible in 24 hours.
